Reuters completes photo training in Afghanistan, Russia

For the first time in each country, the Reuters Foundation recently conducted photojournalism workshops in Afghanistan and Russia.

In Kabul, 15 students participated in the training from December 8 to 12. The group included seven participants who traveled to the capital from various parts of the country, Reuters said.

Reuters photographers Ahmad Masood and Desmond Boylan, the trainers, found that the Kabul students were more advanced. For the students from the provinces, they concentrated on the basics of news photography and how a news agency works.

At the workshop in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, conducted December 8 to 10, most of the 16 trainees came from small regional newspapers, online editions, or nearby universities. Photographers Damir Sagolj and Grigory Dukor taught the participants about shooting for news, sports and feature stories, as well as technology and editing issues.

Reuters also conducted photo training in Odessa, Ukraine, and in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, earlier in 2004. The workshops in past years have visited the Greece, Guatemala, Kosovo, Lebanon, the Philippines and South Africa.
